Why was The Holy Spirit sent to us ?
The Holy Spirit can do exactly the same as Jesus did when he was here on Earth. And as you have read Jesus can heal, cure, bring people back to life. But He also can help you with your prayer, give you signs, images or visions. And He can provide Christians with The Gifts of The Holy Spirit and The Fruit of The Holy Spirit.
The special Gifts of The Holy Spirit Christians can apply for the people around them; for bringing the Gospel, educting, healing, prophecising, etc With those Gifts Christians can also pray and act as God would like us to. But Christians need more than 'a special gift' to be able to act; they need "a right mindset" as well.
The Fruit of The Spirit is the other aspect of the special Gifts from The Holy Spirit of God to us. The "fruit" one needs from the inside. For example: Love, Peace, Faith, Goodness, Righteousness, Truth etc.
The Holy Spirit won't give you more of Him than you can handle. Nor will He make you do things that will hurt you or others. So there is no need to be afraid. He is just as caring as Jesus. His Voice is one of gentleness inside. All inspiration, enthousiasm and happiness from the heart is given by Him. By prayer, by gratefulness, by the love and mercy of Christ.
The Holy Spirit in me
After the very moment you are baptisted by immerse and you received the Spiritual Gifts through The Holy Spirit of God, by the laying on of hands, you are connected to GOD by His Spirit.
But the very fact the you went searching for God and for Jesus proves the The Spirit was already busy with you, trying to reason with you, trying to show you the right way. The Spirit has lead you to Jesus; and Jesus is the Door to GOD. Coming to GOD is done by the Spirit of GOD.
It is good to know in this light, that it is only The Spirit of God that can convert someone to God and His Ways. No human-being alone can convert people to God ! Everyone needs The Holy Spirit in him- or herself.
Which special gifts can be given to me ?

The Spirit of God changes us - The fruit of the Spirit
'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.'
In short: God wants us to change: by receiving the Spiritual Gifts, by using those Gifts in honour of Him by serving the people around us and -in that way- growing in love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. This is exactly what the Law is meant for and the Holy Spirit of God helps us changing towards this goal.
